What is a macchiato?
Macchiato is the Italian word for marked. There are two types of macchiatos:
1. Espresso Macchiato- straight espresso marked with a dollop of warm milk froth
2. Latte Macchiato- steamed milk is marked with an espresso poured slowly over the milk foam at the side of the cup
What is coffee and where does it come from?
The coffee bean is the seed of a bright crimson coffee cherry, which is the fruit of the coffee tree. Read page 2 and 3 for a more in-depth description of where coffee comes from and how it grows.
How is coffee similar to wine?
Much like wine tasting, coffee tasting is a technique used to evaluate the flavor profile of coffee. Terms such as acidity, body, aroma and flavor are characteristics used to classify quality coffees.
• Acidity refers to the pleasant and sharp quality of coffee that keeps it from tasting muted. It is a desirable characteristic that shouldn’t be confused with the bitter connotation its name suggests, and can be measured as a sensation of dryness on the back of the palate and under the edges of the tongue.
• Body is the overall feeling of coffee in the mouth. The tongue perceives it as heaviness, thickness, and richness.
• Aroma is the combination of smell and taste, contributing to the flavor’s subtle distinctions.
• Flavor is the total impression of coffee in the palate, and is a combination of acidity, body, and aroma.
